New Subway Stanzas posters will be on show at every station on the Glasgow Underground to mark Refugee Week (18-24 June).
The poster, produced by Oxfam in Scotland and the Scottish Poetry Library, will display a gasida written by Iyad Hayatleh, a Palestinian refugee poet based in Glasgow.
Refugee Week is a UK-wide programme of arts, cultural and educational events that celebrate the contribution of refugees to the UK, and encourages a better understanding between communities.
Appeal
Leaving my soul behind
memories
life
my very first step
very first lisping
my first alphabet
mother’s tears
father’s supplications
the familial taste of chestnut on wintry evenings.
Escaping death – maybe – for another death
armed with my heart
my passion
my giving
my pride
spreading my sails for art
my wings for poetry
my appetite for love.
O land of wind
land of persistent, uncompromising rain
of castles
and the brave heart which never goes astray
grant me a fresh chance
to live
to sing
to restore my broken gasida.
